A day that works
Arrive at Termini, metro line B to the Colosseum and the Forum, walk up to the Capitoline Hill and on to the Pantheon, lunch at Piazza Navona or Campo de' Fiori, afternoon in Trastevere or at the Vatican Museums if you've booked. Train back by seven, and at eight you're in the water.
With children
Colosseum early, gelato at the Pantheon, Villa Borghese with the rowing boats on the little lake. You don't need to do everything: the villa is half an hour away, you can come back another day.
